Hector Pieterson became the iconic image of the 1976 Soweto uprising in South Africa during the apartheid regime. Hector was killed at the age of 12 after the Police openned fire on a crowd of protesting students. June 16 is now a symbol of resistance to the brutality of the apartheid government and today it is known as National Youth Day in South Africa.
